As a European data infrastructure, Gaia-X is intended to promote secure industrial digitalization and demonstrate new business models. In the first tranche of the funding competition "Innovative and practical applications and data spaces in the Gaia-X digital ecosystem", the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs has selected 11 winning cases that will receive a total of 122 million euros in funding. We present the six relevant Gaia-X applications for industry.

COOPERANTS: Digitalization of aviation

COOPERANTS (Collaborative Processes and Services for Aeronautics and Space) aims to accelerate digitalization processes in the aerospace industry in order to implement more efficient forms for future working methods and processes across the entire life cycle of space or air vehicles. To this end, various smart services are to be integrated into a digital working environment (data spaces): collaborative project management and system modelling, intelligent assistants, optimizers and diagnostics based on AI, telepresence using virtual/augmented reality, simulations, knowledge management and cyber-physical interfaces.

12 project partners are on board under the leadership of the German Aerospace Center: Airbus Defence and Space GmbH, Data Machine Intelligence Solutions GmbH, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz GmbH, Forschungszentrum Informatik, Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU, itemis AG, Neusta aerospace GmbH, OHB System AG, Radiusmedia KG, ScopeSet Technology Deutschland GmbH, Valispace GmbH, Zarm Technik AG

OpenGPT-X: AI language models and services

The aim of OpenGPT-X is to create GAIA-X-compatible Advanced Smart Services based on innovative language technologies, which will enable data-based business solutions in the GAIA-X ecosystem using large GPT-3-like AI language models. GAIA-X is intended to form the basis for providing scalable computing resources as well as networked and cross-application data spaces using federated services for the creation of large AI language models.

9 partners are working on the use case under the leadership of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.: Aleph Alpha GmbH, Alexander Thamm GmbH, ControlExpert GmbH, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz GmbH, Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, KI Bundesverband e.V., Technische Universität Dresden, Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts, 1&1 Ionos SE

POSSIBLE: User-friendly cloud for SMEs

The POSSIBLE project (Phoenix open software stack for interoperable engagement in dataspaces) aims to develop an innovative and user-friendly cloud solution to make a wide variety of data spaces easily accessible to users and to enable them to handle their data in a sovereign and self-determined manner. In the project, this will be implemented as an example for education, companies (with a focus on SMEs) and administration. Depending on the data room, individual POSSIBLE modules (PIM, communication, storage, office, IDM) can be adapted. Data and services are to be separated and made available to the user in a collaborative, digital, simple and secure manner via GAIA-X.

Six partners are working on POSSIBLE under the leadership of Bechtle AG: August-Wilhelm Scheer Institut gGmbH, Dataport AöR, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V., imc information multimedia communication AG, Univention GmbH, 1&1 Ionos SE Consortium leadership: Bechtle AG

TELLUS: End-to-end assurance for hybrid clouds

TELLUS will develop an overlay across cascades of cloud providers, networking service providers and cloud users to enable end-to-end networking with guarantees for hybrid cloud scenarios, taking critical requirements into account. Following the GAIA-X idea, integration based on interfaces and systems is intended to bridge domain boundaries, ensure interoperability and portability and thus create dynamic networks with variable bandwidths, lower latencies, increased security and control over the data flow in the network.

9 partners are working on TELLUS: Cloud&Heat Technologies GmbH, Kaemi GmbH, Mimetik UG, PlusInvestment GmbH, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, SpaceNet AG, Stadtwerke Wolfsburg AG, Trumpf Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH & Co KG, 1&1 Ionos SE. DE-CIX Management GmbH has taken over the management.

iECO: Data room for the construction industry

The aim of iECO (Intelligent Empowerment of Construction Industry) is to create a common data room for the construction industry on the basis of GAIA-X. A digital twin of the entire building life cycle on the GAIA-X infrastructure is intended to break down existing data silos in the construction industry so that inefficiencies can be significantly reduced and advanced services can be developed to further optimize the entire construction process.

Under the leadership of RIB Information Technologies AG, 9 partners are working on the use case: A1 Digital Deutschland GmbH, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e. V., Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hof, Implenia Hochbau GmbH, IOTA Stiftung, IPROconsult GmbH, N+P Informationssysteme GmbH, Software AG, Technische Universität Dresden.

AW4.0: Car workshop 4.0

AW4.0 aims to create a platform for the trustworthy exchange of data and AI models in order to drive forward the digitalization of the medium-sized workshop sector and to link workshops and measurement system providers via GAIA-X to form an innovation and value creation network. The aim of the project is to simplify targeted troubleshooting in motor vehicles, sustainably reduce the use of resources and time in vehicle repairs and disseminate it as an intelligent diagnostic system via the participating workshops.

The following 7 companies are partners under the leadership of Lmis AG: Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola of DMT - Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung mbH, Auto Intern GmbH, A.T.U. Auto-Teile-Unger GmbH & Co KG, Dekra Digital GmbH, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz GmbH, eco - Verband der Internetwirtschaft e.V..
