Siemens sells eAircraft to Rolls-Royce
At the 2019 Paris Air Show, Siemens and Rolls-Royce signed an agreement for the sale of Siemens' eAircraft unit, which develops electric and hybrid-electric aircraft engines.
With its corporate strategy 'Vision 2020+', the Siemens Group wants to sharpen the focus of its portfolio. With the new owner Rolls-Royce, which has close ties to the aerospace industry, the business with electric and hybrid-electric drive systems for aircraft has significantly better growth prospects, according to the Group. "Our eAircraft team, led by Frank Anton, has already made aviation history several times over the past ten years and has established itself as a pioneer in electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems for aircraft," said Roland Busch, CTO and COO at Siemens. "With Rolls-Royce, we have now found a perfect home for this business and have placed the expertise in the hands of a close partner of Airbus. We will continue our cooperation with Rolls-Royce, in particular by contributing our digital solution portfolio to support this important step towards sustainable, lower-emission aviation," Busch continued. The partners have agreed not to disclose the financial details of the transaction. They expect the transaction to be completed by the end of 2019.
Siemens eAircraft is an in-house start-up with around 180 employees that develops electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems for aviation. In collaboration with partners such as Airbus, prototypes for propulsion systems ranging from less than a hundred to several thousand kilowatts are created at the Munich, Erlangen and Budapest sites - for example for the Airbus air cab 'City Airbus' (see photo gallery). In 2016, eAircraft entered into a development partnership with Airbus to further advance the technology. Siemens has been researching and developing electric drives for aircraft for around ten years and has set several records in the process.
