For the evaluation, Gehalt.de included 3,255 salary data from managers and managing directors.

According to this, restaurant managers receive the lowest salary at 41,600 euros. In small businesses, they earn even less at 37,900 euros. This is followed by chefs with 48,600 euros and branch managers in retail with 51,400 euros. Home managers (53,400 euros) and warehouse managers (56,300 euros) also receive a relatively low annual income.

Managing directors in cultural and educational institutions do not earn much either, with an annual salary of 78,900 euros. This is followed by managers in the hotel and catering industry with an income of 79,400 euros. In small businesses in this sector, the figure is barely 70,000 euros. Managing directors in educational institutions receive 79,500 euros, those in social institutions 81,400 euros and in the healthcare sector 90,300 euros.

In contrast, managing directors in large companies earn significantly more. The salary for managing directors in hotels and restaurants with over 1,000 employees is 138,500 euros.

"The larger the company, the more complex the organizational structures. The demands on the management increase and so does the salary," says Philip Bierbach, Managing Director of Gehalt.de. Managing directors of large companies in the healthcare sector (134,200 euros), in social institutions (105,900 euros), in the cultural sector (102,900 euros) and in education (98,600 euros) receive comparatively high incomes.

A look at the top sectors shows just how high the salary for a managing director can be.

For example, managers in banking and insurance receive around 209,700 euros per year. Managing directors in electrical engineering also earn a high income of around 208,100 euros. This is followed by the software industry (205,800 euros), mechanical engineering (188,700 euros) and biotechnology (160,200 euros). The size of the company also plays a decisive role here: managing directors in large banks and insurance companies receive a top salary of over 342,500 euros. This is more than four times the salary of managers in the cultural sector.
