In the 2nd quarter, the Hays Skilled Staff Index for engineers fell significantly by 20 points compared to the previous quarter to a new value of 131. The index, which has been collected since the 1st quarter of 2015, has never fallen so sharply since then, reports the Mannheim-based personnel service provider Hays.

The lower demand for engineers was seen across all sectors and all fields of expertise. In the three occupational groups most frequently sought in absolute terms, the number of vacancies fell significantly in the last quarter: for development engineers from 122 to 101, for electrical engineers from 160 to 142 and for civil engineers from 210 to 195 points.

The automotive industry fell by 5 points to the new - lowest ever - index level of 78 points, which, according to Hays, corresponds to the tense state of the industry. The number of vacancies in mechanical engineering also fell significantly in the last quarter (from 125 to 108 index points). A similar picture can be seen in the manufacturing industry (from 142 to 125 index points) and in the construction industry (from 204 to 189 index points).

The Hays Skilled Labor Index is based on a quarterly evaluation by Index Internet und Mediaforschung GmbH for Hays. It includes job advertisements from the most popular online job exchanges, daily newspapers and the business network Xing. The reference value of 100 is the 1st quarter of 2015.
