App brings machine data from the control system to the cloud

Siemens offers an IIoT app for machine tools that can be used to read and analyze machine data from a Sinumerik 840D-sl controller and send it to the cloud. Users can obtain digital services via the 'MindSphere' platform.

The 'Fleet Manager for Machine Tools' is one of the first apps from Siemens to connect a control system to the company's IIoT platform 'MindSphere'.

With the 'Fleet Manager for Machine Tools' app, machine tooloperators can connect their Sinumerik 840D-sl controller to the IIoT platform 'MindSphere' from Siemens and then record machine data, transmit it to the cloud and retrieve the visualized data from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection. So far, the app is only compatible with this one Siemens controller. However, the company has announced that other Siemens models and third-party controllers will follow.

Manufacturers or suppliers of machine tools can set up new business models by collecting machine data: The transparency of the operating status and the option for predictive maintenance to avoid unexpected failures and longer downtimes is a prerequisite for selling production output instead of an entire production machine. This model is already being used to a certain extent in industry. Machine tool operators can record information such as the power consumption per production step and compare the values with those of a comparable machine from another supplier

.

The fleet manager application is one of the first apps that Siemens has developed for its IIoT platform MindSphere and will soon be supplemented by other so-called 'MindApps', according to the company.
