B&R
Special employment model
In order to meet the high demand more quickly, B&R is currently introducing a new weekend shift for a limited period of one year. For 20 hours a week, exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays, the company is offering a salary equivalent to a full-time job.
The unconventional move was triggered by the high demand for automation solutions as a result of the COVID crisis and global supply bottlenecks. "Further automation is currently at the top of the agenda in many industries, especially when it comes to moving production closer to the target markets again," explains B&R Managing Director Jörg Theis and adds: "We have responded to the urgency and want to meet the high customer demand for automation solutions as quickly as possible. That's why we have greatly expanded our production and our production times and are now temporarily running additional shifts at weekends."
Broad spectrum of applicants
People of all ages and from all walks of life applied - students and young singles as well as people with children and families and single parents, job seekers as well as career changers or self-employed people looking for a part-time job, right through to older people approaching retirement.
In terms of training, the spectrum also ranges from apprenticeship graduates to Bachelor's or Master's graduates, some even with several degrees. A large proportion of those who have applied come from Linz, Vienna and neighboring Bavaria. Many also accept a longer commute to work, some even up to 4 hours.
Model limited to one year
More than 700 applications were received for the offer. Due to the large number of people interested in the temporary positions, the company held seven job days in January and February instead of the traditional job interviews. Applicants were able to get an idea of their new job directly on site.
As agreed, the weekend shift will run until the end of February 2024, after which B&R hopes that as many of the new employees as possible will transfer to the existing shifts.
