Innovation and education campus for machine automation
ABB has opened a new global innovation and education campus at B&R's headquarters in Eggelsberg, Austria. B&R is ABB's global center for machine and factory automation.
The campus will create up to 1,000 additional high-tech jobs and will include research laboratories for cutting-edge international research as well as training facilities for up to 4,000 people a year. B&R is cooperating with several universities for this purpose. ABB has invested a total of 100 million euros in the expansion of the B&R headquarters. Innovations relating to artificial intelligence, machine and factory automation are developed on the campus.
"Our B&R division is a true innovation hotspot for the transition to more automated manufacturing. The official opening of this campus is an important moment for ABB. We are creating highly skilled jobs and shaping the machines and factories of the future together with our customers," says Björn Rosengren, CEO of ABB.
The new campus will increase the total area of the B&R headquarters to more than 100,000 square meters and, according to ABB, will make the company headquarters, which currently has around 2,400 employees, one of the largest centers for integrated production, research and training in Central Europe. The expansion will also free up space that will be used to further expand the production of B&R products.
According to a recent survey by ABB, eight out of ten companies in Europe and the USA are planning to increase the level of automation in their production. Seven out of ten companies want to relocate production close to the home market or to the home market itself. The potential market volume for machine and factory automation worldwide is currently estimated at 20 billion dollars per year and is expected to rise to 31 billion dollars per year by 2030.
ABB's Innovation and Education Campus is an open innovation hub where B&R will work closely with international customers, companies and start-ups from across the region, as well as research and educational institutions, to jointly develop automation solutions and train the workforce that the factories of the future will need. B&R CEO Jörg Theis emphasizes: "Education is a top priority on our campus. Our Automation Academy will provide inspiration and training opportunities for up to 4,000 people annually, including students, apprentices, professionals and employees of B&R and its customers from around the world." According to Theis, B&R is also planning to establish a dual university education program on campus in collaboration with several universities.
