Chip ideas for the mobility of the future selected

Over 2,000 students submitted their microchip ideas to the 'Invent a Chip 2017' competition on the topic of 'New Mobility'. The VDE and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) have now honored the four most original ideas in Munich.

... was awarded by the jury to Tilmann Bruns (15), Fabian Eich (16) and Justus Kaufmann (16) from Gymnasium Lindlar. The students have developed an innovative ambulance stretcher for fast and gentle transportation in an ambulance. "We are presenting an ambulance model with a movable stretcher that prevents the patient from slipping during the journey. When the ambulance accelerates or brakes, on slopes and in bends, the stretcher is tilted in such a way that no horizontal acceleration acts on the patient," is how the team describes its concept.

The four award-winning microchip ideas are the essence of a selection of ten teams that qualified for the three-day 'Invent a Chip' workshop at Leibniz Universität Hannover in May 2017. A total of 2,150 students in grades eight to thirteen took part in the competition, almost a third of whom were girls. The competition was looking for ideas and concepts relating to the topic of "New Mobility" or the safe and environmentally friendly mobility of the future. At the Microsystems Technology Congress in Munich on October 23, 2017, the students presented their chip ideas to the public, for which they had created a prototype in the workshop. The BMBF and the VDE awarded a total of 8,000 euros in prize money.

In addition to the prize money, the winners of 'Invent a Chip' are included in the selection process for a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. The competition initiative for young chip designers from year eight to thirteen from general and vocational schools was organized by the VDE technology association and the BMBF for the 16th time.
