Audi Autonomous Driving Cup 2017
Focus on artificial intelligence
The 'Audi Autonomous Driving Cup 2017' prize money of 10,000 euros goes to Ilmenau. In the final, the 'Afilsop' team came out on top against competition from seven universities. The students solved tasks in the field of artificial intelligence for the first time.
The overall winner was determined in three stages: The compulsory part consisted of autonomous driving tasks on the course and a scientific presentation. This was followed by an open challenge. In this free demonstration, the eight teams solved a self-imposed task with their Audi Q2 on a scale of 1:8, focusing on artificial intelligence for the first time in the history of the competition.
The electrically powered high-tech model cars were equipped with ultrasonic sensors, a 3D camera, a reversing camera and a powerful Nvidia graphics card for calculating AI algorithms. The interaction between the sensors and the central computer corresponds in principle to that of an Audi production car. With this setup and software coded by the students themselves, the miniature cars entered the race - safely and in accordance with the rules.
In the end, the 'Afilsop' team from Ilmenau University of Technology won over the jury with its outstanding overall performance. The students mastered the driving tasks on the course with aplomb, presented their development work clearly and surprised the judges with their ingenuity in the Open Challenge. Audi Board Member for Development Peter Mertens presented the winner's certificate and the prize money of 10,000 euros. Second place, with a prize of 5,000 euros, went to the 'Taco' team from Offenburg University of Applied Sciences. The 'FAUtonOHM' team from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm came third and received 1,000 euros in prize money.
