Intelligent bicycle pedal among the winners

As part of the 'Cosima' student competition, the VDE and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research awarded two first places this year - for example to the team developing an intelligent bicycle pedal that can be used to upgrade any bike to make it smart.

The VDE and BMBF have been organizing the 'Cosima' competition every year since 2009. The name stands for 'Competition of Students in Microsystems Applications'. The competition involves innovative applications and concepts for existing microsystems components. Students of electrical engineering and information technology compete against each other with their developments. They are looking for applications that improve and facilitate the interaction between humans and technology in various areas of daily life. The special feature of the competition is that there is no fixed task. The only framework condition: An everyday object is to be upgraded with a mechatronic system:

The winners of the 'Cosima' competition take part in the international 'iCan' competition. It will take place in Hong Kong, China, in 2018. 'iCan' (International Contest of Applications in Nano-Micro Technology) is a Chinese initiative for which the winning teams of the regional competitions from China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, the USA and various European countries - including Germany - qualify.
