Mobile connection soon for Apple Watch
One weakness of Apple's computer watch so far is that it needs the owner's iPhone to connect to the internet. According to the financial service Bloomberg, the company will soon be ready to make the Apple Watch largely independent.
According to a media report,Apple plans to launch a new version of its computer watch this year that can access the internet directly via the mobile network. Until now, the Apple Watch has required a connection to the owner's iPhone.
The financial service Bloomberg wrote at the beginning of August 2017 that at least some models of the Apple Watch will now be equipped with chips for connecting to LTE mobile networks. Apple is already in talks with network operators in the USA and Europe, according to reports citing informed sources. At the same time, the market launch could also be delayed beyond 2017, Bloomberg qualified.
The Apple Watch has been the best-selling computer watch since its market launch in spring 2015. The company itself does not provide specific sales figures, but market observers assume more than three million devices per quarter. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently only said that sales had risen by 50% year-on-year in the past quarter.
With the second generation last year, Apple already made the watch somewhat more independent of the iPhone with its own GPS chip, thanks to which, for example, the distance of a training run can be recorded. Samsung introduced a computer watch with a mobile phone connection around two years ago, but its sales figures are not known.
