'Invent a Chip 2018' school competition
Chip ideas for digitization in everyday life
Over 2,000 schoolchildren across Germany submitted their microchip ideas to the 'Invent a Chip 2018' competition. The four most original of these have now been chosen by the VDE and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
How can digitalization be used in everyday life? This year, young people in grades 8 to 13 from 3,000 schools worked on this question. The ten most creative teams learned the basics of chip design in a practical workshop at Leibniz University in Hanover. This gave them the "chance to take their first steps like the professionals", said VDE CEO Ansgar Hinz. "They experience the fascination of new technologies through their own activities." The aim of the competition is to get young people interested in electrical engineering and information technology.
In addition to cash prizes totaling 8,000 euros, the winners of 'Invent a Chip' can expect to be included in the selection process for a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation, contacts with industry and universities and invitations to project presentations at trade fairs. The VDE Technology Association and the BMBF organized the competition for the 17th time this year.
