A total of 4,000 students competed in 118 teams in the 'Formula Student Germany 2018' competition at the Hockenheimring in August. Their self-built racing cars competed in three categories: Combustion Engine, Electric Drive and Autonomous Vehicles.

The young engineers had a year to tinker with their racing car. They then put the capabilities of their vehicle to the test at the Hockenheimring.

Student teams from all over the world had one year to design a single-seater formal vehicle as a prototype for 'Formula Student Germany'. This year, 40 international teams competed in the 'Formula Student Electric' (FSE) class - the competition with electric motors. In the competition with combustion engines - the 'Formula Student Combustion' (FSC) - 60 teams competed this year. For the second time this year, autonomous racing cars also rolled onto the Hockenheimring: 17 student teams - three more than last year - took part in the third competition category - 'Formula Student Driverless' (FSD).

In all three competition classes, speed is not the only thing that counts. The vehicle's performance in three static and five dynamic disciplines is decisive for the overall ranking: The students have to convince the jury from industry and business of the design of their racing car and the business model, for example. After passing the safety check, the performance on the race track also counts. The focus is on driving dynamics, acceleration, but also fuel and energy consumption of the vehicles.
