Electric range and charging network

BMW i3 without range extender in Europe in future

At the end of September, BMW announced that it would achieve an electric range of up to 260 km with new 120 Ah high-voltage batteries. According to media reports, the range extender is now to be dropped for the i3 model in Europe.

In future, the BMW i3 will be exclusively electric in Europe - the range extender is no longer required.

The further development of BMW eDrive' technology in combination with new Samsung cells (cell capacity of 120 Ah and gross energy content of 42.2 kWh) enables electric ranges of 260 km.

Thanks to the increased range and the European network of fast-charging stations, the electric vehicle will be available in the European version without a range extender in future. The official statement reads: "In future, we will only sell the purely electric version". In North America and Japan, however, the range extender will continue to be offered for the BMW i3. The two-cylinder petrol engine keeps the battery charge level constant while driving and increases the range by around 150 km.
