Formula Student Germany 2019
German racing cars prove themselves at the Hockenheimring
Around 3,500 students from 25 countries brought the asphalt at the Hockenheimring to the boil at the beginning of August: At the 'Formula Student Germany 2019' design competition, their self-built racing cars competed in the combustion engine, electric drive and autonomous vehicle classes.
For the 15th 'Formula Student Germany', the student teams had one year to design a racing car. They then put their skills to the test in disciplines such as acceleration, endurance, fuel/energy efficiency, design and financial planning from August 5 to 11 at the Hockenheimring in front of a jury from the worlds of business and science. This year, 60 teams took part in the competition class with combustion engines - the 'Formula Student Combustion' (FSC). 40 teams competed in the 'Formula Student Electric' (FSE) class - the competition with electrically powered racing cars. For the third time this year, autonomous racing cars also rolled onto the race track south of Mannheim. 19 student teams competed in this category. Computer&AUTOMATION has summarized the atmosphere on site and which universities took the overall victory with their designs in a photo gallery.
In all three competition disciplines, speed is not the only thing that counts. The vehicle's performance in three static and five dynamic disciplines is decisive for the overall ranking: For example, the students have to convince the jury of the design of their racing car and the business model. After passing the safety check, the performance on the race track also counts. The focus is on driving dynamics, acceleration, but also fuel and energy consumption of the vehicles.
