Number of e-cars increases significantly worldwide

Despite all the prophecies of doom due to scarce raw materials and a lack of charging infrastructure, the number of electric cars is increasing by leaps and bounds worldwide, according to a study by the ZSW. According to the study, German car manufacturers have also been able to position themselves well.

By the beginning of 2018, the number of electric vehicles had risen to 3.2 million - an increase of 55% compared to the previous year - according to the Stuttgart-based Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW). The market was driven primarily by China, with the most successful manufacturers being the Chinese companies BYD (Build Your Dreams) and BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding).

Around 93,000 e-cars were registered in Germany last year. In 2013, the figure was 13,500.

If the growth rate remains close to the 2017 level, the number of new e-car registrations worldwide will be more than 25 million per year in 2025, said ZSW Board Member Werner Tillmetz. This corresponds to the announcement by many manufacturers that they will have converted a quarter of their production to e-cars by then. Tillmetz emphasized that cell production would have to be expanded enormously to achieve such growth rates.

According to the study, more than 1.2 million electric cars are currently on the roads in China. Last year alone, 579,000 were added. In the USA, the number of e-mobiles rose by 195,000 to over 750,000. Germany performed comparatively poorly - nevertheless, there was an increase of over 54,000 new registrations to around 93,000 cars in total. However, the share of new registrations was only 1.6%. BMW (around 68,000) came in fourth place behind the successful Chinese car manufacturers and the US group Tesla (around 87,000 e-cars), followed by VW with 52,000 e-cars. All vehicles that are charged with electricity were counted, including plug-in hybrids.
