Battery replacement concept
Electric vehicles "refueled" in three minutes
The Swedish start-up Powerswap is pursuing a new solution for charging electric vehicles: instead of plugging in the cable and waiting for the vehicle to charge, the battery is replaced in three minutes using a robotic device.
"Our solution is revolutionary in many ways and will change the way we think about charging electric vehicles," says Sten Corfitsen, founder of Powerswap. The technical concept was created with the aim of using the already well-established recharging infrastructure - the filling stations. "It's better if we don't have to create a completely new infrastructure just because we want to use electric vehicles instead of fossil fuel-powered cars. By installing robot swap units at filling stations and parking lots, we get a cost-effective solution for the transition to a dominant electric transportation sector." PowerSwap differs from previous battery swap trials. These were based on building new exchange stations, which are expensive and require new land. Another difference is that Powerswap does the swapping from the side, which is better when it comes to automation.
"I am confident that we have created something that will lead to a faster increase in electric vehicles. Cab companies and other transportation fleets are suitable niches for our launch because they don't have the time to charge for long periods. We have received a letter of intent from Taxi Stockholm, the largest cab company in Sweden." In summary, the advantages of automatic battery replacement are as follows:
- No time for recharging, faster than refueling a gasoline car
- The vehicle can continue to be used during "refueling" (charging)
- The electric vehicle is sold without a battery, which makes the price of an electric vehicle lower than that of a fossil car. The battery is leased and can be replaced when better technology is available
- An infrastructure is built without the need to build hundreds of thousands of public charging points
- The load on the battery is significantly reduced. Batteries are given sufficient time to charge, reducing peak demand times and the strain on the electricity grid.
Powerswap is a spin-off of Fuelmatics, the inventor of fully automated refueling of liquid fuels. The Powerswap battery swap system offers wireless "refueling" of electric vehicles in three minutes. Powerswap is supported by the Swedish Energy Agency, Energimyndigheten, with the purpose of enabling a more efficient infrastructure for electric vehicles. The company works with Chinese battery manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers.
