Focus on safety

A striking feature of Leuze's SPS stand this year was the 'safety color' yellow. This is no coincidence, as the sensor manufacturer has evolved from a pure safety component manufacturer to a provider of integrated safety solutions.

Leuze presented an access guarding system with dynamic format adjustment, in which pallets are automatically transported in or out by a conveyor belt. The access guarding is designed to allow the transportation of goods with varying widths and different positioning on the pallet, while at the same time preventing people from walking along the sides. For this purpose, access guarding is carried out by two vertically aligned safety laser scanners. Measuring sensors determine the width and position of the goods and send this information to the safety system, which adjusts the protective field for passage accordingly.

According to the company, the 'AMS 100i', the most compact laser positioning system on the market, is a new product in terms of safety technology. It is particularly suitable for tight installation situations in automated intralogistics, such as on storage and retrieval machines, AGVs or lift systems, and can be used in the lifting axis, for example. Users can position with millimeter precision up to 120 m. The IP65 device can also be used in deep-freeze applications down to -30 °C.

Another new feature is the 'FBPS 600i' safety barcode positioning system, which can detect the position with just one sensor. It is connected to a safe evaluation unit via two SSI interfaces and is suitable for applications up to PL e. It is installed on a storage and retrieval machine or cross transfer carriage. A self-adhesive, UV-resistant barcode tape is attached to the opposite shelf. With each scan, the positioning system reads several codes from the tape, from which the software determines the position values. Due to the angled path of the scanning beam and the movement of the trolley, the sensor scans the code at various points. This prevents reading errors due to soiling.
