Sub-area to be realigned

Kuka is realigning a sub-division in the Robotics segment, which is responsible for automated manufacturing solutions such as cells and special machines. The aim is to give it a sustainable business model in economically challenging times.

The restructuring was announced in September as part of the forecast adjustment for the 2019 financial year. The management of Kuka Robotics has now presented a corresponding concept.

A sustainable business model is being developed for the Robotics subdivision, which is responsible for the project business and is based in Augsburg and Obernburg, Franconia, with a total of around 735 employees. It is also planned to cut up to 165 jobs in Obernburg and up to 90 jobs in Augsburg. The aim is to make the sub-division more efficient and competitive with a simplified structure and to work more efficiently in day-to-day business. Details will be worked out over the coming months in close consultation with employee representatives. According to Kuka, the economic development in the subdivision has been tense for years, compounded by the current economic uncertainty.

"The subdivision with its sites in Obernburg and Augsburg is and will remain an important part of the Robotics strategy. Competencies will be bundled more locally, and Obernburg will be developed into a competence center for standard cells," said Klaus König, CEO of Kuka Robotics. "Together with the employee representatives, we are organizing the job cuts fairly for the employees affected. We know that this is a difficult situation and would therefore like to conclude the talks as quickly as possible and with due care. We are convinced that the restructuring is the right way to ensure that the division can operate profitably in the future and make a sustainable contribution to Kuka's success."
