'Second life' for used robots

Instead of scrapping inactive or older robots and leaving them unused in the production hall, existing customers can sell them to ABB via a buy-back service. The robots are reconditioned there.

With its global network of remanufacturing sites, ABB supports customers in recycling the company's used robots.

Over the past 25 years, thousands of robots have been overhauled and modernized by ABB experts to give them a second life. In addition to the robot systems previously purchased by ABB, individual components such as controllers and manipulators are also brought to 'as new' condition in one of the global repair and remanufacturing centers.

Before being labeled as an ABB-certified remanufactured robot, each used unit undergoes rigorous testing, including a detailed inspection and a minimum 16-hour functional test. Each remanufactured robot comes with a two-year warranty. Buyers of refurbished units receive the same support from local service teams, including installation and training, as when purchasing a new robot.
"Unlike third-party refurbishments, which only repair faulty parts, we completely remanufacture our robots using the original design plans, specifications and dimensions. This ensures that the robots offer the same level of quality, performance, durability and safety as a new ABB robot," says Jan Borsky, sales manager of ABB's global repair and remanufacturing centers. "We always have more than 400 used and refurbished robots of various types in stock for sale. The demand for second-life robots is currently so high that more than one robot leaves our factory in Ostrava, Czech Republic, every working day."

Every refurbished robot can also be upgraded to the latest controller version.
