ABB acquires Codian Robotics
ABB has acquired the Dutch company Codian Robotics, a supplier of delta robots, which are primarily used in high-precision pick & place applications.
The Codian Robotics range includes a product series for applications with high hygiene requirements, which is particularly suitable for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. With this acquisition, ABB is intensifying its involvement in the growing segment of delta robots.
Codian Robotics, based in Ede, the Netherlands, employs 20 people worldwide. The company will continue to serve its customers directly. The transaction was signed and completed on October 1, 2020. Both parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
"Codian Robotics' technologies and industry expertise perfectly complement our range of solutions for the food and pharmaceutical industries as well as the service robotics and logistics sectors. At the same time, they strengthen ABB's machine-centric robotics offering," said Sami Atiya, Head of ABB's Robotics & Factory Automation business unit.
Most robots in the food industry are not yet designed for contact with food. Codian Robotics' portfolio, on the other hand, includes a series for applications with high hygiene requirements that can be used to safely process open food. "The need for pick & place robots that meet high hygiene standards is great and has been intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our customers in the food, pharmaceutical and logistics industries are particularly interested in automation solutions that enable them to maintain supply chains while protecting the health of their employees," says Atiya.
