Siemens invests in new 3D printing factory
Siemens is investing 30 million euros in a new production facility in the UK. It will double the company's 3D printing capacities.
Siemens acquired a majority stake in Materials Solutions back in 2016 and is now investing in a new production facility for the British company. The new building in Worcester is scheduled to open in September 2018. This will double the company's capacity and increase the number of its 3D printers to 50 machines. At the same time, over 50 new jobs will be created. The investment is part of Siemens' strategy to establish and expand a global business with services in the field of additive manufacturing for the aerospace industry, the automotive industry and other sectors.
According to Siemens, Materials Solutions is a pioneer in the use of selective laser melting (SLM) technology. This involves manufacturing high-performance parts from metal, preferably from high-temperature superalloys. Materials Solutions works closely with the Siemens Power & Gas Division. It is expected that the company will use the expanded capacity to produce thousands of parts for use in Siemens' power generation plants in the coming years.
