Industrial Data Space
First application implemented
Exactly one year after the Industrial Data Space was founded, thyssenkrupp presented the first use case - an information system for truck logistics.
In January last year, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft founded the Industrial Data Space Association together with partners. The aim is to use the Industrial Data Space technology concept to create a data space in which companies can exchange information securely. Anyone exchanging information in this data space can define exactly which partner is allowed to use which of their data and for how long. They should therefore know exactly what is happening with their data at all times and set the limits for handling the information themselves.
More flexibility in logistics
Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe has now implemented the first application within the project. The company handles around 20,000 trucks every month. Around 30 minutes are available for loading and unloading each truck. If the arrival of a truck is delayed, the entire planning is quickly disrupted.
This is where the company wants to become more flexible. The solution: arriving trucks continuously report their location according to defined rules, for example via an app that the driver downloads onto their smartphone. Based on the position and traffic data as well as the routes that the driver is likely to choose, an algorithm immediately recognizes when a transport will be delayed. Delayed trucks are then automatically suggested a new loading window by the computer system, without human intervention.
Just the beginning
Dr. Reinhold Achatz, Head of Technology at thyssenkrupp and Chairman of the Industrial Data Space Association: "Our application is just the first example of the possibilities of Industrial Data Space. Many applications from other companies will follow, and very quickly."
More than 50 industrial partners are now organized in the association. They formulate requirements for the data space and implement use cases. Achatz: "The Industrial Data Space sets an international standard for data exchange between companies. We want to establish this standard worldwide."
