Self-knitted IoT solution
Thyssenkrupp networks machinery
Thyssenkrupp is taking the establishment of an IoT platform into its own hands: with the Toii solution, the company is networking the diverse machinery of its materials division.
The machinery of thyssenkrupp's materials division is diverse: band saws and edging machines, mobile objects such as cranes and forklift trucks, complex production systems and processing solutions such as milling machines and laser systems. According to thyssenkrupp, all of these machines can now communicate with each other thanks to the new Toii IIoT platform developed in-house. The company plans to use it to integrate several hundred machines per year.
The networking options
The digital platform is designed to enable data exchange and communication between machines as well as between machines and IT systems. This allows processes to be planned and coordinated across locations. The platform is also suitable for simple data analysis.
An international team of IT professionals from Germany, India and the USA developed Toii together. In addition to various projects in Germany, deployments are already planned in the UK and the USA. All data is currently hosted on a central server in Germany. However, in order to comply with all data protection requirements, local server landscapes will also be created in the UK and the USA as the rollout progresses.
Toii in action
Toii is already being used in several pilot projects. At Materials Processing Europe in Mannheim, for example, a new cut-to-length line that produces sheet metal from wide strip has been fully networked with the platform. The result: the platform transmits work orders from the SAP system directly to the machine in real time and controls its settings, from sizes and weights to quantities. The platform also automatically queries the system for all values required by SAP. This means that the status of production and the finished product can be viewed at any time.
Other machines have also been digitally networked and automated with Toii. For example, the thickness measurement of metal strips for effective quality control and automatic panel cutting. This could even be fully integrated into a production line using the platform. And Toii is also set to ensure greater efficiency in other areas such as high-bay warehouses and mobile construction machinery.
