Keysight Technologies completed the acquisition of the software company VPIphotonics on June 9, 2026. With this acquisition, the company is expanding its portfolio of photonics design automation solutions to include system-level simulations. This will enable developers to design and analyze optical and electronic systems within a unified development environment. The companies have agreed not to disclose the financial terms of the transaction.

This is driven by the growing demand for silicon photonics and co-packaged optics, particularly for data centers and AI infrastructures. The increasing complexity of such systems requires simulation tools that can map the entire development process without the need for manual handoffs between different software solutions.

End-to-End Development Workflow

Keysight's portfolio now includes tools for various levels of photonic design. RSoft is used to simulate individual components such as waveguides, gratings, modulators, and laser sources. Photonic Designer supports the development and verification of photonic integrated circuits. The VPIphotonics Design Suite now adds the capability to simulate complete optical systems.

One example of this integrated development approach is “VPI Optical Link in Keysight ADS.” The software enables simulation of a transceiver’s entire signal path—from the electrical domain through the optical domain and back to the electrical domain. Among other things, this makes it possible to predict bit error rates without having to switch between different simulation tools. The results can also be compared with Keysight’s measurement systems, which helps identify errors earlier and reduce the number of prototypes.
