Integration of KNX in Codesys
The industrial standard tool Codesys now supports KNX, one of the most important fieldbus systems in building automation. The integration can be seen for the first time at the Light+Building 2018 trade fair.
Codesys is a well-known and manufacturer-independent development system in industrial automation according to the international standard IEC 61131-3. The software is already used thousands of times in building automation - in particular to intelligently control temperature, lighting and room climate and thus exploit savings and optimization potential.
The KNX integration in Codesys was specified and developed in cooperation with ABB. The product range now being presented at Light+Building 2018 consists of a configurator for I/O channels, a KNXnet/IP protocol stack in the form of a runtime system component and a data exchange function with the ETS5 configuration system. This should allow any Codesys-compatible device to be expanded so that it can function as a KNX participant and communicate with KNX I/Os.
The integrated data channels of the Codesys controller are simply and completely transferred to ETS5 and generate corresponding "associations" in the Codesys runtime system. The input and output data integrated in this way can be provided with an intelligent logic function in Codesys. At the same time, users can transfer the data to other bus protocols such as BACnet or OPC UA. Thanks to the Industry 4.0 properties of the tool, building automation can be networked with SmartFactory or SmartEnergy systems.
