'Invent a Chip 2019' school competition
Original chip ideas chosen
Chips that transmit data via light, control cat flaps or monitor the dispensing of medication - over 1600 students submitted their innovative chip ideas to the 'Invent a Chip 2019' competition. The VDE and the BMBF have now awarded prizes to the most original ones.
Under the motto 'DigiTALENTE', the VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies) and the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) launched the 18th round of the nationwide student competition 'Invent a Chip' in February 2019. As part of the competition, each year they look for girls and boys in grades 8 to 13 who enjoy math and science and want to make a difference with their own microchip ideas. The ten most creative teams learned the basics of chip design in a practical workshop at Leibniz University Hannover. "That's what makes our competition so special: young people learn from professionals, dare to make progress and set new technological trends with their ideas," says VDE Chairman Ansgar Hinz. In this way, the competition aims to inspire young people to take an interest in electrical engineering and information technology.
In addition to the cash prizes, the four winning teams can expect to be accepted into the selection process for a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation, contacts with industry and universities and invitations to project presentations at trade fairs and technology events.
