The counties with the most potentially replaceable jobs

As digitalization progresses, more and more professional activities could be performed by computers or computer-controlled machines. There are regional differences, according to the Institute for Employment Research (IAB).

According to IAB researchers Katharina Degler and Per Kropp in the IAB magazine IAB-Forum, this substitutability potential has increased in almost all occupations in recent years. However, this applies to very different degrees in different regions of Germany. For example, one in seven jobs in Berlin and one in two jobs in the Dingolfing-Landau district are potentially affected. The regions in which many people work in the manufacturing industry in particular have a high potential for substitutability.

According to Statista, the districts of Schwarzwald-Baar, Wunsiedel i.F. and Coburg have the most jobs that could potentially be replaced by digitalization.

These included, in particular, mobile, collaborative robots and self-learning computer programs as well as the first applications of 3D printing and virtual reality. For example, insurance applications can now be checked fully automatically or prostheses and dentures can be manufactured with the help of 3D printers.

The substitutability potential was calculated by the IAB for the first time for 2013. The proportion of employees in highly substitutable occupations rose from 15% to 25% between 2013 and 2016.

However, this does not mean that a quarter of jobs will actually be lost, according to the researchers. The fact that a job is classified as substitutable does not automatically mean that it will only be performed by computers and computer-controlled machines in the future. The substitutability potential merely says something about the technical feasibility. Whether this potential is actually exploited depends on a number of other factors.
