Google expert to make 'Siri' smarter
Apple has appointed an artificial intelligence expert from Google to a management position: John Giannandrea will head up the development of artificial intelligence at the iPhone company in future, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook in an email to his employees.
According to Cook, Giannandrea shares the company's convictions regarding stricter protection of privacy.
It is an important new addition for Apple, as the company is seen by industry observers as being behind Google and Amazon when it comes to artificial intelligence. Apple's voice assistant Siri in particular is repeatedly criticized for working worse than its competitors 'Google Assistant' and 'Alexa' from Amazon. According to Giannandrea, he is one of the leading experts in this field and was also head of artificial intelligence research at Google.
In contrast to Google, for example, Apple is trying to train its self-learning machines with largely anonymized user data in order to protect data privacy. Some experts see this as an obstacle, while Apple itself emphasizes that it has no disadvantages as a result. Artificial intelligence is also used for image recognition in photos, for example.
