Artificial intelligence "still in its infancy"

Although artificial intelligence is one of the key technologies of the coming years, it is still in its infancy in German industry. This is the conclusion reached by the VDI. The association does not see the technology as a job destroyer.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the "next logical step in the digital transformation", said VDI Director Ralph Appel at the start of the Hannover Messe 2018. Intelligent solutions are the basis for highly automated and autonomous systems. In Germany, however, artificial intelligence is still "in its infancy". However, it could become an important "job engine".

AI systems would also develop great potential outside of industry, for example in autonomous driving in connection with better control of traffic flow or in assistance robotics. However, according to the VDI, it does not believe that robots will take over jobs from humans in the future: "If we evaluate and approach the digital transformation and the possibilities of AI correctly, it will become a job engine for Germany," says Appel.
