Baggage handling
Image-based identification replaces laser scanners
Cognex has developed an identification solution for baggage handling at airports: The first image-based, automatic tag reader system called 'ABH-ID' overcomes the limitations of current laser-based baggage ID systems, according to the company.
The ID solution uses a technology recognized in the aviation industry that reads even codes that are difficult to decode and offers high read rates at critical junctions such as transfer belts, where baggage labels are often damaged by loading and unloading processes on the aircraft. The ID solution includes Cognex's fixed-mount 'DataMan' image-based barcode readers. Image-based readers have no moving parts and are therefore virtually maintenance-free, unlike laser scanners, whose parts are subject to wear and tear or can fail.
The ID solution also meets the requirements of Resolution 753 of the International Air Transport Association, which comes into force in June 2018: it requires member airlines to verify baggage registration and handling at three points along the baggage journey - loading, transfer and arrival. During each baggage handling process, the quality and legibility of the baggage label can be affected by smudging, scratching or weathering. The new ID solution has the ability to read damaged labels quickly and accurately.
