Competition of autonomous model vehicles

At the Carolo Cup, student teams competed against each other with their self-developed and autonomously driving model vehicles. However, it wasn't just speed that counted.

The central element for capturing the surroundings were various cameras, some of which the teams attached to very distinctive structures.

This year, the Technical University of Braunschweig, as the organizer, held the Cup in three performance classes for the first time. In addition to the Junior Cup and the main competition, in which real-life scenarios on country roads had to be mastered, four teams competed in the extended main competition for the first time. The aim here was to master more complex traffic situations, such as those found in suburban areas. In this new performance class, the vehicles had to comply with speed limits, pedestrian traffic at crosswalks, turn arrows and complex priority regulations, as well as overtaking bans, among other things.

The teams presented their concepts to a jury of experts from business and science before setting off on the course. Technical solutions, project organization and the energy and cost efficiency of the vehicles are all taken into account in the assessment. The prize money amounts to a total of 11,000 euros. The winner of the extended main competition will receive 4,000 euros.
