Flying cabs about to enter the market
Cab drones are to transport passengers in Dubai from summer 2017 - this has now been announced by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The 'Ehang 184' vertical take-off aircraft, which has successfully completed all flight tests, is to be used.
The cab drone does not have a cockpit with complicated display panels. Instead, the passenger selects their destination conveniently using a tablet PC, as the video now published by the RTA shows. According to the authority, the prototype has been successfully tested and can fly autonomously from place to place. The drone's flight is to be monitored via a ground control station, which is expected to be set up in July 2017. The flying vehicle is electrically powered and has eight propellers - two on each of its four arms.
The flying cab can reach speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. In Dubai, however, it will travel at a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour at an altitude of 1000 meters. The cab drone can carry just over 100 kg. According to RTA, the battery can cover a distance of 50 km or a flight time of 30 minutes. The manufacturer of the drone - the Chinese company Ehang - presented the drone to the public for the first time at the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 in Las Vegas.
