Leoni acquires majority stake in Adaptricity

Leoni, a supplier of cables and cable systems for the automotive sector and other industries, has acquired a two-thirds stake in Adaptricity. The spin-off from ETH Zurich contributes software-supported consulting services based on electrical engineering expertise to the Group.

In addition to expanding Adaptricity's core business, Leoni is also aiming to establish close links with its international project business.

"The majority stake in Adaptricity secures us access to expertise in the areas of software, simulation and cloud-based data analysis. We have defined these as central components of our strategic development into a solution provider," says Bruno Fankhauser, Leoni Board Member responsible for the Wire & Cable Solutions Division, explaining the transaction and adds. "In order to remain a leading technology partner for our customers, we are investing in pioneering and intelligent software and analysis solutions in connection with cables and cable systems, which will also open up new business models for us."

With the majority stake in Adaptricity, Leoni will be able to use proprietary software in future that creates time-series-based simulations, for example to optimize electrical distribution grids using smart grid technologies. In the coming months, the focus will be on transferring the acquired expertise to a number of forward-looking applications and market segments. On the other hand, Leoni intends to build up additional expertise in the fields of electronics, sensor technology, software and data analysis, which are crucial for the range of intelligent cable systems and associated services.
