Cooled systems charge electric cars faster

Leoni is developing a concept for cooled charging systems to shorten the charging times of electric cars and plug-in hybrids. These should enable charging times of three to five minutes for a range of 100 kilometers.

According to Leoni, appropriately cooled charging cables can transport higher charging currents than conventional charging systems. Because the cable cross-section can still be reduced, the charging cable remains flexible and easy to handle.

For a vehicle such as the Tesla Model S with an 85-kilowatt battery and a range of around 400 km, for example, a charging time of only around 15 minutes would be required. To achieve this, currents of up to 400 amps must be transported from the charging station to the vehicle's high-voltage battery, which corresponds to an output of up to 400 kilowatts. Conventional charging systems, which are designed for lower currents, would overheat as a result. A cooled charging cable can withstand the corresponding loads.

Leoni is presenting a concept at the International Suppliers Fair IZB in Wolfsburg.
