Servo technology in focus

Danfoss Drives took its first step towards servo technology in 2015 with an integrated motion controller for the VLT AutomationDrive frequency inverter. Now the Danes want to significantly strengthen their activities in this area with the new FlexMotion concept.

Hannes Leichtfried, Danfoss: "With our new VLT FlexMotion system, the name says it all. Centralized and decentralized servo drives can be flexibly combined as required."

According to Hannes Leichtfried, Sales Manager Danfoss Drives Germany, VLT FlexMotion is a complete servo platform consisting of the Integrated Servo Drive (ISD) 510, the Decentral Servo Drive (DSD) 510, the Integrated Gear Drive (IGD 510) and - brand new at the trade fair - the central Multiaxis Servo Drive (MSD) 510. This enables plant manufacturers and operators to implement applications such as infeed and outfeed systems, rotary table applications and packaging machines or even transport systems with an integrated solution. The entire platform supports Ethercat, Ethernet Powerlink and Profinet.

The MSD 510, which can be seen for the first time in Nuremberg, is a generic multi-axis system consisting of a total of five modules:

  • Power supply modules with 10, 20 or 30 kW,
  • two different drive modules,
  • decentralized access modules and an
  • auxiliary capacitor module.

With this modular concept, both purely centralized systems and decentralized systems with ISD 510 and DSD 510 or even mixed systems can be set up. A common intermediate circuit ensures optimum energy balancing within the system.

According to Leichtfried, one of the unique selling points of the MSD 510 is its 'Click and Lock' mounting concept: "The user simply inserts the required mounting plates into each other and locks them, which simultaneously loops through the power supply and control cables without errors. Once they have been secured in the control cabinet, the individual servo modules can simply be plugged in and also securely locked." In this way, the system can also be expanded quickly and easily at a later date if required.
