Job cuts under wraps

In March, Siemens announced its intention to cut 2,000 jobs across Germany in the Process Industry and Drives division. The final figures have now been finalized - slightly less than initially announced.

Siemens justifies the cutbacks primarily with the slump in demand in the oil and gas industry, which is causing price pressure and a lack of capacity utilization at the plants.

The original plans envisaged that Siemens would cut a total of around 2,500 jobs worldwide in the two business units 'Large Drives' and 'Process Solutions', 2,000 of which would be in Germany with a focus on Bavaria. Around 700 jobs are to be affected at the Ruhstorf site near Passau, around 350 in Bad Neustadt/Saale, around 750 in Nuremberg and around 150 in Erlangen.

After lengthy negotiations with employee representatives, Siemens has now announced the figures, which have been revised downwards: According to these, a total of "only" 1,700 jobs are now to be cut in Germany. In detail, the following locations will be affected: 130 jobs will be lost at Siemens in Erlangen, 590 jobs will be lost in Nuremberg. In addition, 330 jobs will be lost in Bad Neustadt in Lower Franconia and 600 jobs in Ruhstorf near Passau.

The job cuts are to be staggered over a period of four years until 2020.
