Radar measuring devices - use up to SIL2/3

Endress+Hauser is once again launching an 80 GHz radar measuring device for continuous level measurement - for the first time with an 80 GHz operating frequency for the process industry. Markus Schmid explains the background.

Markus Schmid, Head of Product Marketing Level: "A lot of things are certainly important when it comes to vertical integration as part of Industry 4.0 - but in the end, measurement technology is the decisive factor."

Mr. Schmid, what are the benefits of radar level measurement at 80 GHz?

Schmid: With the new device, we now offer a total of 113 GHz for continuous level measurement using the transit time method for measuring liquids and bulk solids. This means that customers can always find the ideal frequency to operate their measuring point. The 'Micropilot FMR6x' therefore primarily rounds off the Endress+Hauser radar portfolio.

What applications is the radar measuring device intended for?

Schmid: "There is no "one" general radar for all applications. But: 80 GHz technology is ideal, for example, for small process connections from 3/4" inch, for containers and silos with many internals - focusing of up to 3° is possible here - and for media with small DK values, because the 80 GHz operating frequency has a higher dynamic range than 26 GHz.

What are the special features of the device?

Schmid: We already used the 80 GHz operating frequency at the beginning of this year for our radar sensors for tank gauging, the 'Micropilot NMR81' and 'Micropilot NMR84', which are highly accurate and approved for custody transfer. This is now followed by the free-radiating radar for the process of measuring in liquids and bulk solids. The 'Micropilot FMR6x' is the only process radar with 80 GHz that has been developed in accordance with IEC61508 and can be used up to SIL2/3. This means the highest level of safety for the operator and a reduction in the time required for the proof of operation phase.

In addition, the measuring device expands our flow and level two-wire platform. On the one hand, we are continuing the standardization of this platform - for example in terms of housing, display, SIL device concept and operation - and on the other hand, functions already familiar to the user are integrated, such as HistoRom - the "unforgettable" data memory.

What does the device offer in terms of diagnostics and user-friendliness?

Schmid: We rely on testing concepts with 'Heartbeat Technology': In addition to permanent self-diagnosis, the 'Micropilot FMR6x' can be verified in its installed state or also tested on a recurring basis - even when used in SIL/WHG applications. The user then receives documentation. These processes are carried out step by step with the so-called 'Wizard' - so no step can be forgotten and the test results are always clear.

How does the measuring device fit into Industry 4.0 scenarios?

Schmid: The 'Heartbeat Technology' also offers a special monitoring function in that it is possible to permanently transmit sensor and process data for trend detection, for example of foam or batch.
