The 'Automation Hackathon' was about using technologies such as blockchain, cloud, machine learning, big data, artificial intelligence and IoT in the field of digital networking of machines. The task that Wago set the start-up Othermo was to use its own gateway and a Wago controller to optimize a heating system and present it in an informative user interface. Othermo used a digital twin to display the central heating system. The hardware core of the solution was the Wago controller 'PFC 200' with embedded Linux. It collected the feedback from the digital twin and controlled the virtual system. A direct interface to Amazon's Alexa served as the voice user interface (VUI). It provided the user with information about the status of the system via voice output and also responded to voice input from the user. The collected data was also displayed in an additional graphical user interface (GUI) and problems with the system were shown in real time. As an example, the team demonstrated a fault message on the heating system's cables, which immediately lit up in the dashboard - Alexa also informed the user of the intervention via voice output.

The prize money for the 'Automation Hackathon' amounted to a total of 15,000 euros. First place received 8,000 euros, second place 5,000 euros and third place 2,000 euros.
