Heidenhain

Inka Krischke,

Long awaited

Heidenhain used SPS 2019 to present EnDat 3. Herbert Reiter, Product Manager Encoders and Electronics at Heidenhain, explains what the enhanced interface for rotary encoders, angle encoders and linear encoders can do.

Herbert Reiter: "Endat 3 enables easy-to-evaluate and meaningful online diagnostics which, together with other sensor data, can serve as the basis for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance."

Mr. Reiter, what's new about EnDat 3?

Herbert Reiter: EnDat 3 transfers the EnDat features into the future of digital production. New features include hybrid cables, bus topologies, the integration of sensor boxes or complex sensor data, a higher data bandwidth, the definition of transmission lists and access levels in the encoder. With regard to the implementation of EnDat, tools are available such as documentation, VHDL code for the master and an evaluation board with sample programs that can be easily transferred to customer applications.

Why was further development necessary?

Herbert Reiter: EnDat has established itself worldwide for position encoders in the machine tool, electronics industry and automation applications. The requirements of the applications continue to evolve - think of the digitalization of production or the implementation of Industry 4.0 concepts - but are very different in each individual case. While the focus in automation is on hybrid cable solutions and sensor integration, in machine tools it is on robust cabling, multidimensional measurement technology and the integration of external sensors. In the electronics industry, on the other hand, the focus is on weight reduction in cabling and multidimensional measurement technology. What they all have in common is the demand for extended diagnostic options and the storage of operating status data. Consistent further development is therefore necessary in order to cover these wide-ranging requirements of our customers. At the same time, the measuring devices are also evolving.

To what extent are single-cable solutions possible with EnDat 3?

Herbert Reiter: Single-cable solutions or hybrid cable solutions are a key requirement in the field of automation technology. Our existing 'HMC 6' solution based on EnDat 2.2 is now available as an 'HMC 2' solution with EnDat 3 and is one of the key trade fair innovations at SPS 2019. The protocol structure of EnDat 3 is designed to use only two wires for communication and supply voltage, which enables standard connectors and cables.

What about functional safety?

Herbert Reiter: EnDat 3 is designed for applications up to SIL 3. The basic principles of EnDat 2.2 - two independent position values and a cyclical test of the monitoring functions in the encoder - have been optimized for EnDat 3 in terms of ease of implementation. This is achieved through the black channel approach in combination with standardized position formats, the option of relocating the forced dynamization to the encoder and the separation of the data packets for motion and safety controller. A safe EnDat master is not required.
