Hanover Fair 2017
Winner of the Hermes Award 2017
Schunk, manufacturer of gripper systems, has won the Hermes Award 2017. This was announced at the opening of the Hannover Messe 2017. The Federal Minister of Education and Research, Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka, presented the industry prize, which is endowed with 100,000 euros.
The gripper specialist from Lauffen in Baden-Württemberg has received the industry award for the development of the intelligent gripper 'JL1'. According to the jury chairman Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Wahlster, Schunk has succeeded in an excellent way in outsourcing part of the necessary robot system intelligence required for barrier-free human-robot collaboration (HRC) in Industry 4.0 to the end effector. The need for a high degree of system intelligence arises for HRC robot systems in Industry 4.0 due to the small batch sizes, high part variance and frequent retooling.
In the 'JL1', the safety sensor system for collision avoidance is integrated into the gripper and does not restrict the range of movement for handling and assembly processes. The sensor system monitors a defined safety area (safety aura). If a collision is imminent, the system reacts according to the situation. The gripper uses force-measuring jaws and tactile sensors to detect various component geometries, provides feedback on successful component detection via a signal light and automatically adapts the gripping process accordingly. The gripping system is self-learning.
