Kuka honors young researchers
The Augsburg-based robot manufacturer Kuka has presented its fourth 'Kuka Innovation Award' at the Hannover Messe. The prize, worth 20,000 euros, honors outstanding innovations in the field of modern mechatronics.
Five teams presented their concepts on the topic of 'Advanced Mechatronics' directly at the Kuka stand throughout the trade fair. A jury of experts finally selected the winner: RAS - a research team from the German Aerospace Center. Bernd Liepert, Chief Innovation Officer at Kuka, said at the award ceremony: "We received applications from all over the world. It was a difficult task for the jury members to select the best concepts."
The five finalists had six months to realize their projects. All applicants had the task of developing a robot application that meets the requirements of modern mechatronics. Whether they developed new mechatronic solutions for external components such as grippers or a new type of human-robot or robot-robot cooperation was left up to the teams. However, there was one central requirement: the system should be as versatile as possible, contain innovative software and hardware components and be usable for several applications.
In order to be able to evaluate the finalists' developments on a comparable basis, all teams implemented their applications on an LBR iiwa, a sensitive lightweight robot for safe human-robot collaboration on a flexible robot unit.
