RoboCup 2017 season opens
The robotics competition 'RoboCup' has entered a new round. Registration for the German preliminary round - the 'RoboCup German Open' - has been open since mid-October. Those who qualify for the RoboCup Junior Final will compete at the RoboCup World Championship 2017 in Japan.
After more than ten years, the last RoboCup World Championship took place in Germany. In the next round, RoboCuppers from all over the world will meet in Nagoya, Japan. First, however, the participating teams have to qualify - the German teams, for example, via the 'RoboCup German Open', for which the qualification phase has now begun.

In general, a distinction is made between 'RoboCup Major' - the competition for scientists - and 'RoboCup Junior' - the competition for young technology enthusiasts. As the number of school teams has risen sharply in recent years, the more than 460 teams nationwide must first qualify in regional preliminary tournaments to take part in the German preliminary round - the 'RoboCup German Open' in Magdeburg. Six qualifying tournaments will take place in spring 2017:
- at the University of Hanover: from February 6 to 8, 2017
- at the University of Mannheim: on February 11 and 12, 2017
- at the Vöhringen Cultural Center: on 18 and 19 February 2017
- at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences: on February 18 and 19, 2017
- at the cooperative comprehensive school in Rastede: from March 8 to 10, 2017
- at the Urania Berlin: on March 11 and 12, 2017
Online registration for these six RoboCup Junior qualification tournaments is open until November 30, 2016. The international teams from the RoboCup Major section have a little more time: they can register until December 15, 2016. Registration is only possible online.
The teams that succeed in one of these tournaments will meet the best RoboCup Junior teams from all over Germany at the final in Magdeburg in May 2017. There, the German champions in the three disciplines 'OnStage', 'Rescue' and 'Soccer' will be crowned. The best teams will qualify to take part in the RoboCup World Championship, which will take place in Nagoya, Japan, from July 25 to 31, 2017.
