China becomes R&D hub for autonomous robotics
Siemens has announced that it is locating its global research into autonomous robotics in China. The company is also entering into a partnership with Tsinghua University and is jointly establishing a research center for robotics in Beijing.
The technology and innovation fields related to autonomous robotics are part of Siemens' strategy to take a leading role in areas such as new mechatronic systems, human-machine collaboration and the application of artificial intelligence in robotics control. In addition to autonomous robotics, data analytics, cyber security, the Industrial Internet of Things and solutions for connected cities are among the company's most important R&D projects, especially in China.
As part of Siemens' 'Innovation Day China 2017' on September 14 in Suzhou, Siemens and the Hong Kong Science Park also signed an agreement to establish the first digital hub for smart cities. At its heart will be MindSphere, Siemens' cloud-based operating system for the Internet of Things. Siemens has also extended its collaboration with the city of Zhuhai. A customized intelligent traffic management solution is to be set up here. Sensors have been installed in the Suzhou Industrial Park. These 'Embedded City Sensor Boxes' are designed to help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, optimize infrastructure and improve public safety.
China is one of Siemens' largest R&D locations. At the end of fiscal year 2016, there were around 4,500 researchers and engineers, 20 R&D hubs and more than 11,000 active patents and patent applications.
