Manage IoT devices centrally

Rexroth and Bosch Connected Industry presented the jointly developed 'Device Portal' at SPS IPC Drives 2017. OEMs, service providers and end users can use it to efficiently manage distributed IoT instances remotely.

Security and function updates can be monitored, configured and transmitted to all connected participants from the Device Portal.

According to Dr. Heiner Lang, Head of the Automation & Electrification Solutions business unit at Bosch Rexroth, the 'Device Portal' focuses solely on managing the globally installed device base over the entire life cycle: "This gives users a complete overview of all IoT devices in the production network and a potential access option to these devices - keyword remote access." According to Rexroth, the portal solution is based on open standards and can therefore also be expanded by other manufacturers to include additional components.

Rexroth had already presented its first own IoT gateway based on the IndraControl XM control hardware at last year's SPS IPC Drives. In future, the software can also be operated on other platforms such as the Linux-based IPC generation from Rexroth. To access production and machine data, the web-based tool can be connected to a wide variety of sensors, servers and controllers via so-called 'device apps'. The multi-sensor CISS from Bosch, the OPC UA predecessor OPC DA and other third-party control systems, including Beckhoff CX and Allen Bradley/Rockwell ControlLogix, are now supported. The data is forwarded for analysis and evaluation via 'Processing Apps', which now also support MES systems and offer a generic REST service in addition to various cloud services and on-premises solutions.

Last but not least, Rexroth is expanding its range of motors for the trade fair: the high-torque MS2N servomotor is now also available with an integrated encoder in the SIL3 PLe category for demanding tasks with SafeMotion. The new series enables single-cable solutions with ATEX conformity in device group II, category 3G/3D. As a direct drive alternative for classic ball screw drives with servomotors, Rexroth will also have self-cooled iron-core linear motors in its portfolio in the future with the ML3 series.
