According to the VDMA Valves Association, the German industrial valves sector closed the past year with a nominal decline of 1%. The association had already reported a 2% decline in sales in the previous year.

Developments on foreign markets were mixed in 2015: while sales in the eurozone fell by 3%, manufacturers on markets outside the eurozone were able to increase their sales by 1% - meaning that foreign business overall closed at the previous year's level. Turnover in Germany was also weak, falling by 2%.

In terms of product groups, only sales of shut-off valves declined (-6%). Demand increased for control valves (+3 %) and safety and monitoring valves (+5 %).

In terms of order books, German manufacturers recorded an overall decline of 1% compared to the previous year. Only orders from abroad developed positively (+1%). Orders from the eurozone were even 6% higher than in the previous year. On the domestic market, on the other hand, the industry fell 3% short of the previous year's result.

Forecast for 2016: outlook somewhat gloomier

According to the VDMA, many countries rich in raw materials are operating on the brink of national bankruptcy due to the fall in commodity prices and are therefore forced to make greater savings. The effects of the easing of sanctions on Iran cannot yet be assessed either. The association is also looking anxiously towards China, where the government is preparing for significantly lower growth rates in the future than in the past. Against this backdrop, the fittings trade association expects turnover in 2016 to remain at the previous year's level at best.
