Apple launches new iPhone

iPhone X - the mutant among smartphones?

Has Apple made a new leap in smartphone evolution with the iPhone X? One thing is certain, Apple's latest flagship is packed with numerous features: from the all-glass design display to the new camera system. It also offers an innovative unlocking option.

iPhone X will be available for pre-order in more than 55 countries starting Friday, October 27, and in stores starting Friday, November 3.

"For over a decade, our ambition has been to create an iPhone that is entirely a display. iPhone X is the realization of that vision," said Jony Ive, Apple's Chief Design Officer. With the introduction of iPhone ten years ago, we revolutionized the cell phone with Multi-Touch. iPhone X ushers in a new era for iPhone - one where the device becomes the experience."

"iPhone X is the future of the smartphone. It's packed with incredible new technologies, including the innovative TrueDepth camera system, the beautiful Super Retina display and the super-fast A11 Bionic chip with neural architecture," said Philip Schiller, Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. iPhone X enables exciting new user experiences - from unlocking iPhone with Face ID, to playing immersive AR games, to sharing Animoji in Messages - it's the beginning of the next ten years of iPhone.

Full screen design
iPhone X introduces a new design with a full-screen display that follows the curvature of the device, right down to the rounded corners. The all-glass front and back of iPhone is made from the toughest glass ever used in a smartphone, according to Apple. iPhone X is available in silver or space gray and is encased and reinforced by a highly polished stainless steel band. A seven-layer color process enables precise color tones and opacity on the glass surface and a reflective optical layer enhances the intense colors while maintaining splash and dust protection.

Super Retina Display
The 5.8" Super Retina Display is the first OLED panel to meet the demands of iPhone, according to Apple - with stunning colors, true black levels, a million-to-one contrast ratio and broad color support with the best system-wide color management in a smartphone. The HDR display supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. The addition of True Tone dynamically adjusts the display's white balance to the ambient light for a more natural, paper-like viewing experience.

iOS 11 has been redesigned to take full advantage of the Super Retina Display and replaces the Home button with fast and fluid gestures, allowing customers to navigate iPhone X intuitively and naturally. Simply swipe up from the bottom to get to the home screen from anywhere.

Authentication via Face ID
Face ID is based on the TrueDepth camera system, which consists of a dot projector, an infrared camera and an infrared illuminator, powered by the A11 Bionic to accurately map and recognize a face. These depth sensing technologies work together to securely unlock the iPhone, enable Apple Pay, gain access to secure apps and many other new features.

Face ID projects more than 30,000 invisible IR dots. The IR image and dot pattern are pushed through neural networks to create a mathematical model of the user's face and send the data to the Secure Enclave to confirm a match, while machine learning is designed to recreate physical changes in appearance over time. All stored facial information is protected by the Secure Enclave to keep the data safe and all processing is done on the device and not in the cloud to maintain user privacy. Face ID only unlocks iPhone X when the user looks at it, while comprehensively trained neural networks have been developed to prevent manipulation by photos or masks, according to Apple's statement.

Front and rear cameras with portrait light

The new 7 megapixel TrueDepth front-facing camera, which enables Face ID, features wide color capture, automatic image stabilization and precise exposure control and brings portrait mode to the front-facing camera for selfies with a depth of field effect.

iPhone X also features a newly developed 12 megapixel dual rear camera system with dual optical image stabilization. The ƒ/1.8 aperture on the camera with wide-angle lens combines with an improved ƒ/2.4 aperture on the camera with telephoto lens. A new color filter, deeper pixels and an improved image signal processor developed by Apple are said to enable advanced pixel processing, wide color capture, faster autofocus in low light and better HDR photos. A new 4x LED True Tone flash delivers twice the uniformity of light distribution and includes Slow Sync, resulting in more even illumination of backgrounds and foregrounds.

Designed for AR
The iPhone X's cameras are fine-tuned for the ultimate AR experience. Each camera is individually calibrated, with new gyro and accelerometer sensors for precise motion tracking. A11 Bionic handles world tracking, scene recognition and graphics at 60 fps, while the image signal processor performs real-time lighting estimation. With ARKit, iOS developers can take advantage of the TrueDepth camera and rear cameras to create games and apps that deliver immersive experiences that extend far beyond the screen.

The new camera also delivers the highest quality video recording ever achieved in a smartphone, Apple said, with better video stabilization, 4K video recording at up to 60 fps and slow-motion video in 1080p at up to 240 fps. The video encoder developed by Apple offers real-time image and motion analysis.

Portrait Mode with Portrait Light, which is initially launching as a beta, is designed to bring dramatic studio lighting effects to the iPhone on both front and rear cameras, enabling customers to capture portraits with a slight depth of field effect in five different lighting styles.

With iOS 11, iPhone X supports HEIF and HEVC for up to twice the compression and storage of up to twice as many photos and videos.

Animoji brings emoji to life
The TrueDepth camera brings emojis to life in a new and entertaining way: with Animojis. Working in conjunction with A11 Bionic, the TrueDepth camera captures and analyzes over 50 different facial muscle movements and then animates them into a dozen different Animojis, including a panda, a unicorn and a robot. Available as a pre-installed iMessage app on iPhone X, customers can record and send Animoji messages with their voice that smile, frown and more.

A11 Bionic
A11 Bionic features a 6-core CPU design with two cores for high performance that are up to 25 percent faster and four cores for high efficiency that are said to be up to 70 percent faster than the A10 Fusion and deliver the industry's best performance and power efficiency. A new second-generation performance controller can harness all six cores simultaneously, delivering up to 70 percent more performance while giving users two hours more battery life than iPhone 7. A11 Bionic also integrates a graphics processor developed by Apple with a 3-core design that is said to deliver up to 30 percent faster graphics performance than the previous generation. According to Apple, all this performance enables new machine learning, AR apps and 3D games.

The new A11 neural architecture has a dual-core design and performs up to 600 billion operations per second for real-time processing. The A11 neural architecture was developed for special machine learning algorithms and enables Face ID, Animoji and other functions.
