Hololens meets robotics

At Iconics, the Hololens is used in conjunction with a robot. To this end, the company has adapted its HMI automation products to the new technology.

In collaboration with Comau, a company of the Fiat Chrysler Automotive (FCA) Group, Iconics is showing a real-time 3D mixed reality visualization with the Hololens glasses from Microsoft: a robot that can be controlled and interacts with the data glasses. In addition, a holographic image of the robot can be controlled using gestures and speech. The movement of the holographic robot corresponds to that of reality. Measurement data, such as cycle times or speed, are displayed virtually next to the robot. A command to the virtual robot, either by voice or gesture, triggers the real robot to deliver a piece of chocolate to the dispensing point, for example. Iconics will show visitors how they can take advantage of augmented reality in conjunction with the company's automation software and will also present its holographic machine interface technology. A live demonstration will also show the automation software in action. Participants will be able to visualize, analyze and mobilize the actions performed by the robot with the associated data through software solutions.

Cooperation with Microsoft

Iconics works closely with Microsoft in the field of visualization software - also in the area of process visualization. The fact that the Hololens can project several holograms onto different walls opens up a wide range of possibilities for the use of supporting software. The products developed by Iconics for the glasses help with engineering and establish a connection with the technical processes. With Alarmworx, historical and/or real-time alarms are projected onto the nearest wall as 2D holograms, providing a direct insight into important alarm data without having to use a stationary PC first. Various metrics such as power consumption, pressure and runtime are quickly visible, leading to better detection of impending faults, downtime and loss of resources. 3D representations of machines and components can be created in Graphworx, enabling a 360-degree view of systems. With Hololens, these holograms can be scaled to fit any conceivable robot or machine on a desktop. Iconics' focus in the industrial field of visualization is on a completely new user experience as well as simplified maintenance and training. The standard real-time visualization product 'Genesis64' can now be used not only on standard PCs, smartphones or tablets, but also on the Hololens. This makes things easier for the user, as there is no need to learn a separate new tool or generate complex source code.

Suite for IoT gateways

With its IoT Gateway Suite, the company is also presenting a direct connection from various devices to the Azure Cloud. Once installed on compatible IoT gateway hardware devices, communication with Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform and services, or other cloud-based services, is enabled. The Azure IoT Hub then acts as a kind of messenger between the hardware gateway and the connected participants, making the gateway suite an edge-to-cloud application.
