Facebook announces cheaper VR glasses
Facebook is planning to boost its virtual reality business with an aggressive pricing policy. The online network wants to launch a cheaper version of its Oculus VR glasses, which do not require a PC, at the beginning of 2018 - for 199 US dollars (168 euros).
The price of the top model 'Oculus Rift' has been permanently reduced to 399 US dollars. Most recently, the device and controller had been sold for this price for months as part of a discount campaign. At market launch in early 2016, the goggles alone still cost USD 599.
The virtual reality business, which allows users to immerse themselves in artificial worlds using special glasses, has not yet developed as dynamically as expected. However, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg bet big on it and bought the industry pioneer Oculus for over USD 2 billion in 2014. On October 11, 2017, he set the goal of gaining one billion users for VR applications.
