Catchbook

New consumer app from Siemens

Siemens is presenting an app for the consumer market for the first time: 'Catchbook' is designed to convert simple sketches into precise 2D designs. The software runs on all common operating systems and costs a maximum of 5.99 euros.

The aim of the 'Catchbook' app is to combine the ease of freehand drawing with the power of computer-aided design (CAD). According to Siemens, it is the only app that converts freehand drawings into mathematical curves that produce precise drawings. This should enable all users - whether occasional private users or professional engineers - to depict ideas accurately and efficiently. This means that amateurs can convert sketches into 2D drawings even without CAD experience and designers can capture their ideas more quickly.

The app runs on devices with Android, iOS and Windows operating systems and is available to download now, from a free basic version to a full-featured version for 5.99 euros.

In the background of the app, the software component D-Cubed from Siemens works as a tool for geometric 2D constraint solving to record and save the relationships between geometries. This allows users to interactively edit drawings in Catchbook. These can then be shared directly via social networks or e-mail, or exported as images. It is also possible to transfer the drawings as sketches to other graphic design or commercial CAD systems, including NX and Solid Edge software from Siemens.

The consistency of engineering

In product development, each engineering discipline uses its own development methods. What is missing is a common model that all developers can work on. Model-based system engineering in combination with a PLM system can fulfill this requirement.
